Coming back to dig in with her Lynchburg, VA gentle readers. This special garden affair is sure to enlighten your day just to meet our Queen of “Soil”.

The Anne Spencer Memorial Foundation, Inc. is proud to present in the historic Anne Spencer Garden in Sunday, September 28,2024. The late summer shade under the red oak tree surrounded by Anne and Edward Spencer’s restored garden, circa 1940 will nourish your soul as you listen to Camille Dungy read from her brilliant and beautiful memoir titled, “Soil”. Book clubs, followers, gardeners, poets and friends join us to this once in a lifetime event!

The program will conclude with a short Q&A and book signing. Books will be available to purchase. Photo Booth too!

Donate- Bring your old garden shoes or new or old shoes to donate to our Shoe Drive& Recycling Program which supports our community and education programs.

Crystal Wilkinson as the fifth recipient of VCCA's Anne Spencer Fellow 🌸

Established in 2017, this fellowship honors the legacy of Harlem Renaissance poet and civil rights activist Anne Spencer.

As the 2024 Anne Spencer Fellow, @crystalwilki will spend a month in residence at VCCA this summer and will share her work at a special event presented in partnership with the Anne Spencer House & Garden Museum.

ABOUT CRYSTAL WILKINSON

Crystal Wilkinson, a recent fellowship recipient of the Academy of American Poets, is the award-winning author of PRAISESONG FOR THE KITCHEN GHOSTS, a culinary memoir; PERFECT BLACK, a collection of poems; and three works of fiction - THE BIRDS OF OPULENCE, WATER STREET, and BLACKBERRIES, BLACKBERRIES. She is the recipient of an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Poetry, an O. Henry Prize, a USA Artists Fellowship, and an Ernest J. Gaines Prize for Literary Excellence. She was Poet Laureate of Kentucky from 2021 to 2023. She currently teaches creative writing at the University of Kentucky where she is a Bush-Holbrook Endowed Professor.

We are seeking artists to create Anne Spencer inspired artwork to be displayed during our Garden Day event on April 18, 2023. We welcome all art forms— paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and more— to interpret and celebrate the life of Anne Spencer and her beautiful garden. Learn more about Anne Spencer’s life here, read some of her poetry here, and explore her house and garden here.

Accepted artwork must be delivered to the Anne Spencer House & Garden at 1313 Pierce on the day of April 17 or before 9am on April 18.

Michael Gibson is on a mission to beautify residential and commercial spaces through the use of specialized topiary and landscaping skills, beautifying our community with topiary one property at a time. See Mike live in the historic Anne Spencer Garden! SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16 (12:00PM-2:00PM)

Tickets $150 (Proceeds to benefit the construction of the new education center Pop’s Chicken House.)
